What better way to start Easter Sunday morning than with a solitary run in the predawn to meet a small, chilly group of cheerful folk and stand together quietly watching the sun rise? I remember my first ever Easter sunrise service, over in Bramhall Park in 1985. It was the first (but not the last) day I had three breakfasts: one before the sunrise service, one en masse at the vicar’s house before the 8am Communion service, and another brunch-y style one on returning home at usual breakfast time. (Now I think about it, that last one probably wasn’t strictly necessary.)
So a very brief blog today, just to say Happy Easter, and whatever you’re doing and however many breakfasts you’re having, I hope you catch something of this glorious day of hope and joy. I love these words from Pope John Paul II:
Do not abandon yourselves to despair. We are the Easter people and hallelujah is our song.
