Everybody Writes: Your Go-To Guide to Creating Ridiculously Good Content by Ann Handley
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Writing about writing is just about the most cripplingly self-conscious activity you could undertake (trust me on this) but Ann Handley carries it off magnificently. This is superb practical instructional stuff, delivered in the manner of a good friend over a few drinks.
Everybody, and every business, needs to be in the business of writing these days. As Handley observes: ‘In an online world, our online words are our emissaries; they tell the world who we are.’
But we don’t just write to puff about our products – at least, we shouldn’t. There’s something profound behind the act of writing well that points to something nobler and more purposeful, more human and connected: ‘Empathy for the customer experience should be at the root of all of your content, because having a sense of the people you are writing for and a deep understanding of their problems is key to honing your skill.’
And that’s what this book does so beautifully: interweaves the passion and purpose of writing with tactical, practical tips on how to do it really well.
It’s a masterclass, and a joy.
